Strategic Partnerships
The international network of Forschungszentrum Jülich is based in many ways on partnerships that have evolved over many years. Strategic partnerships play a crucial role in the success of Jülich’s research. The main feature of these partnerships is the mutual benefit they offer the parties involved. Forschungszentrum Jülich uses several different common formats of cooperation for its collaboration with international partners. In individual cases, the foundations for collaboration are contractual agreements based on existing contacts between scientists and the identification of parallel interests for cooperation.

AIDAS - AI, Data Analytics and Scalable Simulation
AI, Data Analytics and Scalable Simulation (AIDAS) is a virtual laboratory between the CEA in France and Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany. Its goal is to establish a joint international research institute for simulation, quantum computing, data analysis, and AI in the era of exascale computing and beyond.
Berkeley Lab — Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Forschungszentrum Jülich have enjoyed many years of collaboration. Cooperation covers various subject priorities, such as materials research, plant sciences, energy technologies, as well as Earth and environment. It is expected that the partnership between the two institutions will be expanded and consolidated further in future.

SIMIT - Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology
Forschungszentrum Jülich has maintained partnerships over many years with the Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT). As part of “Jülich Day”, Jülich also promotes exchanges with cooperation partners and alumni in different regions of China.
JUMPA - Jülich-University of Melbourne Postgraduate Academy
Forschungszentrum Jülich also maintains a close strategic partnership with the University of Melbourne within the scope of the Jülich–University of Melbourne Postgraduate Academy (JUMPA). The cooperation began in 2018 after many years of successfully working together. The JUMPA programme offers graduates the chance to carry out a joint doctoral project at the University of Melbourne and at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The doctoral researchers on the programme spend at least twelve months in Germany or in Australia.

Umbrella
The Umbrella Cooperation is a trilateral cooperation between Forschungszentrum Jülich, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, and RWTH Aachen University. The respective contract was signed on 29 April 1983 under the patronage of the then Premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau. The main parts of the cooperation are currently the Umbrella Symposia, which have been held almost every year since 1984, the Umbrella Award, and joint summer/winter schools in Israel and Germany. A particular focus of this significant cooperation is the integration of young scientists.

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology - MIPT, Russische Föderation
Since 2006, the MIPT and Forschungszentrum Jülich have combined their respective strengths in science and teaching. Within the strategic partnership, there are now eleven Jülich subinstitutes successfully cooperating with MIPT, one of the leading technical research universities in Russia. The main focus of the activities of the joint labs at the MIPT is on the shared research topics from life sciences, soft matter and biophysics, biotechnology, solid-state physics, as well as energy research.
