2024 FZJ Delegation Trip to Japan and South Korea

From April 14 to 20, 2024, an FZJ delegation trip to Japan and South Korea took place under the lead of Dr. Jansens, VS-II.
On April 14, 2024 (Sun) in Kobe, Japan
A short excursion was organized prior to the workshop the next day, and in the evening there was a meeting with the Japanese colleagues from RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), where traditional Japanese dishes were served and an informal networking dinner took place.
On April 15, 2024 (Mon) in Kobe, Japan
On April 15, a joint workshop on Supercomputing beyond Exascale was held at R-CSS. The workshop was opened with a warm welcome by Institute Director Satoshi Matusaka. In his welcoming speech, the Head of Economic Affairs at Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Osaka-Kobe, Johannes Schweizer, emphasized the importance of cooperation in the field of cutting-edge technologies and pointed out the upcoming challenges posed by AI, QC and exascale. After some constructive discussions about future cooperation, the delegation was also able to visit one of the fastest supercomputers in the world, Fugaku.
On April 16, 2024 (Tue) in Tokyo, Japan
On this day, two parallel workshop programs ran separately at RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing (RQC) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech). Both Workshops – FZJ-RQC Workshop on “Quantum Computing” and FZJ-Tokyo Tech Workshop on “Hydrogen” – were successfully concluded with many discussions about future collaboration.
At the end of the day in Tokyo, an evening event was organized with the support of the DWIH-Tokyo and the German Embassy. More than 50 representatives from Japanese universities, research institutions and industry attended the evening reception and very lively discussions were held, making the event a great success.
On April 17, 2024 (Wed) in Seoul, South Korea
In South Korea, the delegation first visited a former Jülich scientist at LG-Chem. With a high-ranking participant from LG-Chem, the delegation was able to gain a good overview of a leading Korean companies and discuss possible collaborations in the future.
On April 18, 2024 (Thu) in Seoul, South Korea
On the second day, the FZJ delegation conducted some joint programs with the HGF delegation that was in South Korea at the same time. The first was a visit to the IBS Center for Quantum Nanoscience at the Ewha Womans University, with which PGI-3 has been collaborating since 2019. In the afternoon, a Korea-Germany S&T High-Level Meeting took place at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), where the FZJ delegation was able to get an overview of the activities of the South Korean research institution and identify potential partners. The concluding evening reception at the German ambassador's residence offered the FZJ delegation the opportunity to make further contacts not only with the Korean partners but also with the members of the HGF delegation.
On April 19, 2024 (Fri) in Daejeon, South Korea
(KIER) the FZJ-NST Joint Workshop on "Energy" and at Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) on "Future Computing". Above all, the meeting between Mr. Jansens and KIER President Yi at teatime and the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding* between KIER and FZJ were of great importance for future cooperation with South Korea in the energy sector.

On April 20, 2024 (Sat) in Seoul, South Korea
The official program of the delegation was concluded on Saturday with a visit to the Changdeokgung Palace and a traditional Korean market, so that the FZJ delegation could also learn something intercultural.
Meeting between Prof. Lambrecht and Mr. RIKEN President Gonokami
On April 22, 2024 (Mon) in Tokyo, Japan
Directly after the FZJ delegation’s visit to RIKEN Wako, a meeting between Prof. Lambrecht and Mr. Gonokami took place at the RIKEN HQ on Monday, April 22. Although the two CEOs were meeting for the first time, the discussion went very smoothly as they have very similar professional backgrounds and pursue similar values and strategies as CEOs. They look forward to continuing the successful collaboration between the two organizations and expanding their opportunities for cooperation.
