Fascinating Insights into the ‘Engine Room’ of the Protein Factory

Jülich, 5 November 2013 – Who or what sets everything in motion in complex work cycles? This question also applies to the protein factories in cells – the ribosomes. For the first time, computer simulations performed by a research team from Göttingen, Jülich, and Düsseldorf have shown with atomic precision which mechanisms and forces are at work in ribosomes. Their experiments revealed the ‘cogs and wheels’ that control and coordinate the ribosomes’ movements. (Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, 3 November 2013, DOI: 10.1038/nsmb.2690)
